Downtown Seymour Artist Profile: Pete Baxter

Pete Baxter is a first generation woodworker specializing in Shaker chairs and oval boxes. Visit the Pete Baxter Shaker Craftsmen Gallery located in the heart of historic downtown Seymour, the gallery offers patrons the opportunity to view and purchase pieces handcrafted by the artisan.

Baxter has earned membership into both the Indiana Artisan and Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsman, and his work has juried into Early American Life Magazine's Directory of Traditional American Crafts for 2012 through 2015. The Directory is an honor bestowed on a handful of Artisans who work in traditional media, style, and crafts. An artisans work must be rated a Master or Museum Quality level for inclusion in the Directory.

The Southern Indiana Center for the Arts was the idea of recording artist John Mellencamp and his mother Marilyn. Through John’s generosity the Center has established itself as a regional center for the visual, performing, and artisan arts. The Southern Indiana Center for the Arts is housed in an 1851 two-story brick mansion owned by recording artist John Mellencamp. It is a Greek revivalist style with Italian details on the porches. The house has a unique history and has changed little over the years.
